When Is It Time to Switch Cleaning Companies?
A cleaning company can show up on schedule and still leave important work undone. Here's how to tell when the service you're paying for isn't delivering.
A cleaning company can show up on schedule and still leave important work undone. If stains linger for weeks, supplies repeatedly run out, or dirt collects in places your team uses every day, it may be time to take a closer look at the service you're paying for.
Pacific Service Enterprises recently took over cleaning for an office where the manager had noticed exactly these problems. During our walkthrough, we saw dust and trash beneath desks, coffee stains and muddy footprints on the floors, stains on work surfaces, restrooms that needed more attention, and hand towel dispensers that were often empty. According to the office manager, the previous provider had been contracted to clean the floors after each service, but the results did not reflect that work.
Here are five signs your cleaning service may need to change.
1. Dirt builds up around desks and furniture
A quick pass through the open floor can make a room look clean from a distance. Look beneath desks and around chairs and trash bins. If dust and debris keep accumulating there, ask how your provider handles those areas and how often they're included in the service.
2. Floor stains remain between visits
Coffee spills and muddy footprints are easy to spot. When the same marks are still there after multiple cleaning visits, compare what you see with the floor care listed in your agreement. A recurring service should produce recurring results.
3. Frequently used surfaces are neglected
Desks and other work surfaces can collect visible spills and stains. If surface cleaning is included in your agreement, those marks shouldn't become a permanent part of the office. Be clear with your provider about which surfaces its crew may clean, especially where employees keep personal items or documents.
4. Restrooms don't feel clean
Restrooms are one of the clearest places to judge the quality of a cleaning service. Visible stains or hair left around toilets after a visit deserve prompt attention. Restroom cleaning affects how employees and visitors experience the whole building.
5. Supplies keep running out
An empty hand towel dispenser may seem minor until it happens again and again. If replenishing supplies is part of your provider's responsibility, repeated shortages suggest that no one is checking the details consistently.
What to do before you switch
Start by documenting what you're seeing and reviewing your cleaning agreement. Note the dates of missed tasks, take photos where appropriate, and give your current provider a clear chance to address the issues. Ask who checks the crew's work and how problems are reported and resolved.
If the service still falls short, review your contract's notice and cancellation terms before arranging a replacement. This can help you plan a smooth transition without a gap in cleaning.
At the office we recently took over, we began with an initial deep clean and followed it with recurring service. The people working in the building noticed the improvement and told us they were happy with the results.
